Val Comelico is considered the “Valley of Flowers” because of the abundance of wildflowers which are at their peak in June and July.
Discover hundreds of unique species just leisurely strolling along the easy walking paths around the villages. Many of these flowers are rare “alpine gems” such as Lady’s Slipper Orchid, Blue Gentian, Orange and White Lilies, Butterwort etc. If you venture further up on the rocks and screes you may even find the rare Edelweiss and many different species of herbs and healing plants.
Your leisurely strolls can take you into the gently undulating fir, larch and pine woods, where you can discover a wide variety of wild mushrooms such as the much sought after “Porcino” used in many Italian dishes, or gather some wild berry fruit. If you’re lucky you could catch a fleeting glimpse of a roe deer, a chamois or even spot a marmot. You’ll hear its distinct “whistle” – the marmot’s warning. Local birds of prey include: owls, eagles and peregrine falcons.
Following an ancient path you might stumble across the “Sasso della Borcia”. This prehistoric stone monolith which is 3 metres long, is shrouded in mystery.
You may just prefer to laze by one of the many crystal clear alpine lakes and streams, or try some fishing.
Why not finish off your day at a charming mountain “rifugio” (a full service mountain hut) and sample some local cuisine. Just relax and soak up the atmosphere, you’ll be amazed at the breathtaking pinks of the mountains at sunset.
