Comelico Superiore

Comelico Superiore is situated in the province of Belluno, in the Veneto region, in the heart of the Dolomites. It covers an area of 96 sq km and borders  with the Fruili Venezia Guilia region, the province of Bolzano (Alto Adige region) and Austria. The municipality of Comelico Superiore is made up of 4 villages: Padola, Dosoledo, Candide and Casamazzagno as well as the small nearby townships of  Sacco, Sega Digon, and Sopalu’.

The Val Comelico is a unique and unspoilt environment, surrounded by fir-tree forests and lush green meadows, with characteristic  mountain-style houses, hay-barns and quaint villages dotted around the hillsides. All this in the wonderful setting  of the spectacular Dolomites.

Candide, Candide is the main administrative centre and is where the Town Hall is located. It’s the oldest village and overlooks all of the valley. Being in a sunny position it gets the most of the winter sun and in summer is exposed to the fresh valley breezes.
In the town centre there are to note two very old antique houses: Casa Gera 16th century , and Casa Giacobbi  17th century. The Alpine Garden  in summer is worth a visit. Here you can admire numerous different plants and flowers of the valley.

Casamazzagno, Perched up on a gentle slope just above Candide overlooking the whole of the Comelico Valley is Casamazzagno, a very pretty village with steep, narrow roads,  a perfect tourist’s haven because of it’s sunny position and it’s peaceful atmosphere. Just a stone’s throw away form the centre  one can walk in the woods and go mushroom and blue-berry picking, or just simply relax  and enjoy the peace and quiet.

Dosoledo This village is  in a central position situated between Candide and Padola. One cannot help but notice the very old wooden hay-barns in a row overlooking the valley. Farming is still an important activity  for the locals, who are deeply devoted to their local culture and customs and in particular the traditional Carnival Festival held every year in February. There are a number of interesting antique shops to visit where you can admire objects of a bygone era.

Padola Heading north and just a short distance from Dosoledo is the next village of Padola. A charming village, nestling in a gentle valley at 1215m above sea level. It’s the main tourist centre and here you can find lots of tourist attractions such as the ski-fields  with a four-seater chair-lift  reaching 2000metres  and over 30km of cross-country  ski-trails all set amongst unspoilt nature and snow-laden  fir-trees. Other options available  are summer and winter trekking, dog-sledding, ice-skating and many interesting walking trails to surrounding mountain huts (rifugi)

The villages are wonderful just for strolling around through the narrow streets where you can admire century-old stone and timber houses, and buildings, antique fountains, and churches, historic reminders of the past.
They are all starting points for some of the finest walking trails in the valley, in particular the themed “Nature and Cultural” trails a must for all visitors.
